How do OMR Sheets Work?
The OMR
software reads specially designed sheets known as the OMR sheets. But, what
exactly are these OMR sheets? The OMR sheets may look like any other printed
sheet but there are a few things that make them different from the regular
ones. For starters, you would see black dots or index points on the four
corners of the page. Apart from this, the OMR sheets have bubbles or circles,
which are used for collecting information. This sheet has different functions
and is known as answer sheet, test sheet, objective response sheet, bubble
sheet, oval sheet, etc. Let us check out how these sheets work.
Step 01: The first step is designing the OMR
sheet. One can design an OMR sheet using the OMR sheet reader software. One
can customize the OMR sheet or use one of the formats already available on the
software.
Step 02: Once the sheet is designed, the next step is to
print them. As in earlier times, it is not necessary to use thick sheets to
print the OMR sheets. On the other hand, any type of A4 size printing sheet, be
it thick or thin, can be used for printing the OMR sheets. However, it is important
that only white paper is used for the purpose. Any laser or offset printer can
be used for printing the OMR sheets.
Even good photocopies of OMR sheets can be used.
Step 03: After the OMR sheets are filled, they are
scanned using a flatbed or ADF scanner. An OMR scanner is not required for the
purpose because the OMR software reads scanned sheets. In other words, the OMR
scanner does not do the reading. The scanning does not need to be perfect too.
The software can read skewed, titled, distorted and rotated sheets with 100%
accuracy.
With the
introduction of OMR software, designing, printing and scanning OMR sheets have
become easier. Moreover, it has also reduced the cost of printing OMR sheets.
